Sometimes, the journey to a killer six-pack — often characterised by endless crunchesplanks and leg-raises — can seem like one that’ll never end.

But your workout is only 30 per cent of the struggle. As we all know, your best-ever body is built in the kitchen, or – in ex-US Marine and Fortune 500 CEOlifestyle coach Andrew Wittman Ph.D’s case – out of the kitchen. Allow us to explain.

As a marine, Wittman was no stranger to pushing his body to extremes to get results. But, in 2010 when he was deployed, he made a rash decision: “It was my 45th birthday, I wanted to see my abs,” he said.

Though he was in peak fighting fitness and functioning extremely highly, he was not as lean as he would have liked and was looking for a specific aesthetic.

“I’m reading all the studies on how you get your body to do that,” he continued. “There was a lot of research on intermittent fasting, and of course, they did the studies on soldiers.”

After lengthy research, Wittman found a way the practice could work. “Your body really doesn’t go into starvation mode,” he said. “You could go 3 weeks on 800 calories and you don’t lose any muscle mass as long as you’re working out. Well, I could do that.”
