No Bull!
“In bullfighting there is a term called querencia. The querencia is the spot in the ring to which the bull returns. Each bull has a different querencia, but as the bullfight continues, and the animal becomes more threatened, it returns more and more often to his spot.
As he returns to his querencia, he becomes more predictable. And so, in the end, the matador is able to kill the bull because instead of trying something new, the bull returns to what is familiar. His comfort zone.”
Carly Fiorina
Conventional thinking would tell us that we are like the bull, and returning to our “comfort zone” will set us up for ultimate failure. However, what if we took the matador’s point of view on this? What if we became the matador in life’s ring and the bull wasn’t us? What if the bull is our major obstacle de jour? The bull is the problem, and you? You are the matador, remembering at every hoof stomping charge, that bulls don’t win bull fights, matadors do.
Whatever you are facing, stay in the ring long enough, keep your head in the game, and stayed focused. Take mental notes how the bull reacts, and where it returns after trying to skewer you. If you can keep yourself from panicking, if can keep your wits about you, if you can overcome the fear of the beast bearing down on you, victory awaits. Be patient. You MUST be more determined than the snorting brute. Think clearly. You don’t have to be a genius here, you only have to be smarter than the bull. Be strategic. Know that the plan, going in to the ring, is to learn the querencia of the monster. Be swift and resolute. Once you see a pattern emerge and discover the querencia, strike quickly and decisively at the heart of the problem.
Execute the solution as soon as the opportunity presents itself. This is a bull fight, not a rodeo…there are no clowns to save you. You have to save yourself…so forget grabbing the horns and make hamburger.
Boo yah!!
