DayDream Believer

“The will to do springs from the knowledge that you can do.”

James Allen

 Daydream believer

Most folks work hard, very hard.  Why then is the middle-class shrinking and losing it’s net worth?  Why are so many just plodding through life? Punching the clock, struggling through the morning until lunch, and then barely hanging on until quitting time… Another day in the books, and one closer to an unaffordable retirement.  Why do so many of us stay in jobs we hate?

It’s not laziness.  It’s not lack of willpower.  It’s that folks don’t believe they can do any better.  Most believe with all their hearts, they are doing everything they can to do well. They just can’t see their lives any better, unless they catch a lucky break, or win the lottery.

Having a great and happy life (success and fulfillment), is available to each of us in the free world.  The truth is, the vast majority of us squander the opportunities that cross our paths because we can’t imagine that it will work out.  Exactly, we can’t imagine.  Very few people, including clients, have ever taken the time to imagine a great and happy life, and then write down what that looks like to them (i.e. a vision for their life).

Without the knowledge of what you want your life to look like, you end up with Forrest Gump’s Mama’s version of life, a box of chocolates.  You get whatever fudge they packed in the box at the candy factory.  (Oh, by the way, they stack the boxes with the cheap nasty fillings that nobody likes.)

If you are lacking the willpower to get up and go after a great and happy life, check your imagination.  You probably don’t believe you can have a great and happy life, you probably don’t know what that would look like, because you probably haven’t taken the time to imagine it. Do a little day-dreaming, and write down what you see in your mind’s eye.  You might as well, what else are you going to do waiting for lunchtime to get here?

What Is Your Personal Vision?

As a consultant/coach, the most important thing for me to learn about my client is what their personal vision is for their life.  Ask yourself these questions:

What do I want my life to look like 5 years from now?

What do I want my life to look like 10 years from now?

What choices am I making today that puts my on the path to getting there?

Saipan. One hands is holding a glass sphere and it projects the sky and the clouds at the beach.

Most people have no personal vision and are starkly afraid to think about what their lives will look like in 5 or 10 years, especially if they continue doing what they are doing, and have been doing.  Each of us MUST have a personal vision.  What’s that Andrew? Sounds like a buzz word from a motivational speaker.  I know, it’s so over-used and under-explained.

Vision is the act of gazing at an internal sight; or a sight mentally, seen in the mind’s eye  (imagination).  We have to be brave enough to see in our mind’s eye what our lives will look like in 5 years if we stay on the track we are on.  It’s scary because deep down we know the ugly truth is, well, UGLY.  Create an internal sight, in your mind’s eye of a great life in 5 years time.  Think about everything you want your life to be, if it was possible.  Don’t think about why it can’t happen, or that it’ll never happen.  Think only about what you would want your life to be if nothing was impossible.  It might not be probable, but it is possible.  Take probable off the table for this exercise in creating a personal vision for yourself.  (Imagine what you would do if you won the Clearing House Ed McMahon thingee, if you can’t get there any other way.)

This is the very FIRST STEP toward having a great life in 5 or 10 years, build your personal vision.  What’s your house look like that you are living in? Do you have a speed boat? Do you look smoking hot like a fitness model?  My friend Steve Siebold has his clients pretend to write a letter to a friend about their life and what it looks like 5 years into the future.  Be sure to tell as much detail as possible (like how great your back patio is with a hot tub, stone fire pit, water fall, flat screen TV, full bar, outdoor kitchen, etc.)
