Do You Love What You Do?

Do you love what you do for a living? Not just like it, do you love it?  How do you feel about your job, on a scale of 1-7 (1 you hate it, and 7 you love it)? Can you get to a 6 or 7?

One of the biggest reasons that people aren’t Peak Performers, is that they don’t absolutely love what they do.  Good performers might like what they do, but to be really great requires a passion for the work.  (And, of course, when you are passionate about what you do, it ain’t work!)

This past weekend, I had a conference in Las Vegas, and I took my wife and kids.  We went to the top of the Eiffel Tower, where we experienced the greatest of good luck and fortune.  There in sky, we happened upon one of the richest treasures in all of Vegas, Vearn Rogers.  Vearn is a living history book on the Strip, and the city itself.  He enthralled us with detailed stories, facts, figures, dates, etc. on each hotel/casino that we could see from the 541-foot vantage point.

He has been interviewed several times by CBS, has an upcoming interview with FOX, and was featured in the Las Vegas Review-Journal (CLICK HERE).  The experts have rated his photographic memory as number 3, in all the world.  Scoffing at the ranking, he told me, “When you love something, you want to know all about it, and you remember everything about it. I love this city.”

WOW! As I descended the tower, I thought about what Vearn told me.  He made a great point.  I’m crazy in love with my wife.  Even after 24 years, I still want to know everything about her, and when I find out a detail (like her ring size, shoe size, and favorite chocolate thing-ees), I remember it.

The same thing holds true for whatever contract/job I’m on.  When I really love the work, and feel that it is worthwhile, it’s not like work at all, and my performance level skyrockets.  Whenever, I only “like” the work, I know it’s time to pop smoke; and if I hate it, well, then it’s time to di di mau.

Do you love what you do? Like it? Dislike it? Or hate it?

If you currently don’t love what you do, can you get there? If not, what are you going to do about it?

Boo Yah!
