How Do Spend Your Hard-Earned Down Time?
“Rich people have small TVs and big libraries, and poor people have small libraries and big TVs.”
Zig Ziglar
I love this quote from one of the greats. It rings true, even if we don’t like to hear it. I’m not anti-entertainment but I am constantly in learning mode. My kids know what shows, movies, and novels I like to read…it’s got to have something in it to make me think. “Mind Candy” is okay during Beach Week, but the rest of the year I’m an active sponge, soaking in as much knowledge and understanding as I can possibly absorb, which in turn, produces wisdom.
Of the Big Three, (Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom), Wisdom is the principal thing. We should make an all out effort to gain Wisdom, at all costs. Wisdom actually means “skillful in applying knowledge”. Knowledge being information that forms the basis of any subject in the Universe. Understanding is much deeper and involves mastery of the inner workings of that specific subject (the why and how it works). Wisdom is the skillful use of Knowledge and Understanding, in REAL LIFE and REAL TIME. It goes directly to having good judgement and the ability to make sound and effective decisions in the heat of the moment.
When it hits the fan and life kicks me in the teeth, that is not time to try and figure out what I need to do next or how to handle the circumstances. Because I’ve done my homework, spent less time engaged in entertainment and more time in getting Wisdom, I have a much better chance of coming out on top. Remember, as Louis Pasteur said, “Chance favors the Prepared Mind”, not the “Entertained Mind”.
