Calories vs. Consciousness

As a Mental Toughness Coach, I tend to view things from this perspective, “Mind over matter, if you don’t mind then it don’t matter.”  (Stolen from Senior Drill Instructor Sgt. Dozier)

calories vs consciousness

When it comes to weight loss, the adage “fewer calories ingested than calories expended” is proven fact.  So, yes, weight loss or weight gain happens based on calorie count.  However, I believe, the reason that so many struggle with weight issues is more a “consciousness” issue then a calorie issue.

In our Mental Toughness University training, which we present to corporate sales and management teams, we break down levels of consciousness into 5 simple levels.  Of course, there are thousands and maybe tens of thousands of levels of consciousness, but to make it simple we break it down to 5.  (You can learn more about this in my business partner, Steve Siebold’s book, “177 Mental Toughness Secrets”.)

You can locate your own level of consciousness by listening to what it is that you are saying.  The words you use, the language and phrasing of your conversations.  It’s really easy to spot during a quick one-liner response to a stranger, say at the grocery store.

“I love these chips with dip, but they go straight to the hips,” the stranger might say to you on the snack aisle.

“I know, and it’s so hard to get it off once it’s on there,” you may respond with a knowing chuckle.

Boom! You just agreed to “loving” the chips and dip, and you offered your belief (level of consciousness) that losing the weight is difficult.

The thoughts you think, produces what you believe; which in turn produces how you act; which produces your results.  It goes like this, you think you love chips and dip, and losing weight is hard; you come to believe you love chips and dip, and losing weight is hard; you eat chips and dip, and do nothing to lose weight because it’s hard; you gain weight.

Weight gain or weight loss happens because of your consciousness (your thinking).  The massive amounts of empty calories you’re pounding (yes, even on “cheat days”), isn’t the problem, it’s a symptom of your level of consciousness when it comes to food, nutrition, exercise, health, and fitness, which is the problem.

Change your thinking, change your results.

Boo Yah!!
