RIDE HARD

The best advice I’ve ever been given was by my leadership mentor, Lt. Col. John Folchetti.  He was my commanding officer back in 1989, both of us had just joined Weapons Company 3rd Battalion 6th Marines.  The Panama conflict was turned up on high heat, and we were going.  During his Change of Command speech he told his Marines this, “Gents, Ride Hard, Shoot Straight, and Never Lie.”

There is so much in those few words, that even though it stuck with me, it was years before I began to fully understand the scope and depth of his advice.  Today, we will just look at the “Ride Hard” part and the next two days we’ll cover the others.

Ride Hard

Riding Hard is all about maximum effort in every task we take on.  Reaching Peak Performance requires focus and energy.  As my Mama used to say, “You have to use some elbow grease!”  It’s a simple concept, but not easy.  Peak Performance is a four letter word – WORK.  To many people you might as well have just cussed them, especially when you tell them success in anything requires exertion on their part.  I’ve heard people look at other’s success and say, “Well, they just got lucky.”   WRONG! They didn’t JUST get lucky.  They may have caught a break, but they had to do the preparation and work to be ready to capitalize on that lucky break.

Peak Performance requires the Mental Toughness to RIDE HARD!!

If you don’t Ride Hard, you’re going to have a really long wait to make it to the top of your field.  In whatever area of life you want to realize success, you are going to have to put your back into it!

Boo yah!!
