Strong Engagement of:

1) Honest Assessment/Objective Reality

2) Inspiring a shared Vision

3) Competence – Always having a Solution on the board & modeling the way

4) Challenging the Process/Status Quo

Over a 30 year period of observation, organizations from Fortune 500 companies, to small businesses, to churches, to schools, to youth athletic leagues, that strongly engaged in the above mentioned areas performed at an average of 18 times the NET to their bottom lines. (The Leadership Challenge 5th Edition, Kouzes and Posner, page 27)

All performers raise their performances to the level of expectation, and conversely lower their performances to the level of frustration.

When frustration levels become so great that expectations are equally low, take a time-out, a physical break, and cooling off period.  Hit the reset button.  Start fresh with a new focus on the 4 areas of engagement.  Soon after the new focus takes root, expectations will automatically begin to rise, and subsequently, so will performance.
